Short answer: A traditional townhome has a front garage and a private backyard. A back-to-back shares its rear wall with another home, so it has no backyard and uses a balcony or terrace instead. A rear-lane townhome has its garage at the back, off a lane. A stacked townhome is one home on top of another, usually sold as a condo. The price list at a new community only makes sense once you know which one you are looking at.

    Traditional townhomes

This is the townhouse most people picture: two storeys, a driveway and garage at the front, and a fenced backyard. You share side walls but nothing behind you. They cost more than the other types because of the yard, and they are the easiest to resell to families. At Cornerstone by Primont Homes in northwest Brampton, two-storey traditional townhomes start at $699,990.

    Back-to-back townhomes

A back-to-back shares its side walls and its rear wall, so there are homes on three sides and windows only at the front, unless it is an end or corner unit. There is no backyard. Outdoor space is a balcony or terrace, and the home is usually three storeys with the garage at ground level. In exchange you get a freehold home at a lower price. At Cornerstone, back-to-back townhomes with a double-car garage start at $629,990 for 3 bedrooms and 1,241 sq ft, including the expanded HST rebate for buyers who qualify.

    Rear-lane townhomes

The garage is at the back and opens onto a lane, so the front of the home faces the street or a park with no driveway in the way. Many have a double garage and a deck above or beside it. Some builders call a version of this a dual-front townhome, because it has a finished face on both sides. Ask who clears and maintains the lane.

    Stacked townhomes

Two or three homes are stacked in one building, each with its own front door. One unit may be on the lower two levels and another on the upper two. They are almost always condos, so there is a monthly fee, and parking may be underground. They are the lowest-priced way to buy new. Stacked townhomes in Brampton currently start around $400,000 for a one-bedroom and about $560,000 for three bedrooms, based on builder price lists.

What they cost on the resale market

In August 2026 the average freehold townhouse in Brampton sold for $731,389 and the average condo townhouse for $569,104, according to the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board. Freehold townhouses sold in 31 days and condo townhouses in 42.

Questions to ask before you choose

    • Is it freehold or a condo, and is there a monthly fee? Some freehold townhomes sit on a private road with a fee for snow removal and upkeep.
    • Where will the car go? Check the garage width and whether a second car fits on the driveway.
    • How many stairs? Three-storey layouts put the kitchen and bedrooms on different floors.
    • Where is the light? An interior back-to-back has windows on one side only. An end unit costs more for a reason.
    • Who will buy it from you later? A yard and a double garage both help resale.

    Questions people ask

    What is a back-to-back townhouse?
